In a landmark move set to reshape travel and unity across the continent, Ghana has officially announced visa-free entry for all African passport holders, effective May 25, 2026. The policy, unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama, is scheduled to coincide with Africa Day—a symbolic date that celebrates African unity and progress.
This decision positions Ghana among a select group of African nations championing free movement across the continent. Countries like Benin, Rwanda, Seychelles, and The Gambia have already adopted similar policies, and Ghana now joins them as a key advocate for open borders within Africa.
The visa-free policy eliminates the need for pre-arrival visa applications, making travel easier, faster, and more accessible for millions of Africans.
This move aligns with broader continental goals like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to promote economic integration and intra-African trade.
Interestingly, while visa-free entry is being introduced, Ghana is also rolling out a modern e-visa system. This system is expected to enhance border management, ensure security, and streamline entry processes for travelers.
